LOOKING THROUGH A DIFFERENT LENS
by Mark Lewis

Chris Coulthard and Mikell Hall come from vastly different backgrounds, but their friendship will never relinquish. They are two talented and successful young men coming of age in an ever-changing world. The social norms widely observed within their particular cultures no longer determine what is considered morally acceptable. Instead, a folkway is what has been created through interaction with the women in their lives and their families’ values, which for them could have dire consequences. That process organizes exchanges through routine, repetition, habit, and consistency.

Mores are strict in determining the difference between right and wrong in their age group and society. More than Chris, Mikell feels they must punish others for what he perceives as their immorality, which is common in many cultures. In their world, they often disapprove to the point of ostracizing long-term friendships.

They are learning the hard truth of 1 Corinthians: “When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child. When I became a man, I put away childish things.” Now realizing what they did at twenty, they would not do at thirty, and that life causes them to look at themselves and the people around them differently, they find themselves Looking Through A Different Lens.
